It is the seed of innocence. IVF or In
Vitro Fertilization, commonly known as 'test tube baby' is the miracle term for
infertile couples wishing to have a baby. This technique has enabled many
depressed couples to have their children, and gained knowledge of the
unparalleled joy of parenthood.
What is IVF?
This is a procedure in which a woman is
given hormone injections daily for a period of about 10 days. The aim is to
form 8-15 major follicles. The patient is given a trigger for oocyte
maturation, after which, after 36 hours, the oocytes are aspirated through a
vaginal needle. The oocytes are fertilized with sperm in the laboratory to form
an embryo.
1. Vaginal intercourse is safe in the
early part of the IVF cycle. Yet this has to be done using barrier methods such
as condoms because sperm can survive longer in the female genital tract and
risk multiple pregnancies in an unintentional state of follicular rupture prior
to oocyte feeding. In the latter part, this is avoided by preventing follicular
rupture.
2. After oocyte feeding, sexual
intercourse is avoided for every day or two to avoid pain and risk of infection
in the female partner.
tubal damage or block
Absent or low sperm count (<5
million/mL)
Damaged uterine lining (endometrium)
Poor ovarian (egg) capacity/advanced
female age
Fertility treatment failure for
significantly 2 to five years
Success Rate Of
IVF:
In the best cases (good sperm, egg and
uterus quality) the success rate can reach 50-60% of attempts and 90% in 2-3
attempts. However, where the quality is not good the success rate is low.
Process Of IVF :
The IVF process includes ovarian
stimulation, egg collection, fertilization, embryo culture and embryo transfer.
Screening procedures like normal ultrasound and blood tests are a pre-requisite
for going ahead with IVF. If any abnormality like fibroids etc. is detected, it
is treated before proceeding with IVF.
Ovarian stimulation requires daily
injections of hormones (usually for 10-12 days) to the female partner along
with frequent clinical and ultrasonographic monitoring.
Egg retrieval is done under anesthesia,
internally without incisions or scars.
In this procedure either the egg is
mixed with sperm (IVF) or the sperm is injected into the egg, which is called
intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
This process creates an embryo, once
fertilized, which is then cultured for 2-3 days in the laboratory.
Then the best 2-3 embryos are selected
and transferred to the womb (uterus) on the second or third day.
The blastocysts are transferred on the
fifth day decided on a case-to-case basis.
The bioassay is run fourteen days after
embryo transfer.
Estimated time required and when to
arrive:
It takes about 5 days in an IVF cycle
from the start of menstruation to embryo transfer. In this case, you'll want to
feel 3-4 days before the numbers start.
Many patients will not be ready to spend
that much time. If you already take your medicines from us, your stay is often
reduced to 10 days per week during the time of embryo transfer. In this case,
you will arrive on the 7th or 8th day of your period
You can travel back 2-3 days after the
embryo transfer. We are sure that traveling does not reduce the chances of
pregnancy.
It takes 15 days to obtain bioassay
results from embryo transfer.
Number of visits and hospitalizations
The total number of visits can usually
vary from 4-6.
There is no overnight hospitalization
and both egg feeding and embryo transfer are day care procedures.
The husband must come on the day of
eating the egg or must deposit the sperm first.
